A Las Vegas couple now holds the controlling stake in the Dallas Mavericks. Patrick Dumont, the Las Vegas Sands chief executive who has served as the Mavericks’ governor since 2023, and his wife, Sivan Ochshorn, have bought Miriam Adelson’s shares of the NBA team, ESPN reported Tuesday and the Las Vegas Review-Journal and CBS Texas also reported.
According to the team, the purchase gives the Dumont family about 69% of the franchise. Ochshorn is Adelson’s daughter, so the shares stay within the family that bought control of the team from Mark Cuban in late 2023. CBS Texas reported the deal was completed last month.
Who owns what now
Cuban keeps a 27% stake, and a minority shareholder holds the remaining 4%, Hoops Rumors reported, citing The Dallas Morning News. Under the 2023 agreement, the Dumonts can buy another 20% from Cuban before the end of 2027 at the original $3.5 billion valuation, which would take the family to 89%. Dumont told ESPN he plans to buy that additional share “over time.” Financial terms of the Adelson sale were not disclosed, and reports did not say whether the NBA Board of Governors still needs to sign off.
ESPN reported Adelson has had minimal involvement with the team since the 2023 purchase. Dumont is also leading the Mavericks’ search for a new arena; the team has an option on a 104-acre site at the former Valley View Mall in north Dallas, and its lease at the American Airlines Center runs through 2031.
What it means for locals and visitors
Nothing changes on the Strip tonight, but the deal puts one of Las Vegas’ most prominent gaming executives in charge of an NBA franchise as Las Vegas keeps pushing for a team of its own. The Mavericks have previously said they have no plans to relocate to Las Vegas, and nothing in Tuesday’s reports suggests that has changed. For Sands, which no longer operates on the Strip after selling The Venetian, the move keeps the Adelson-Dumont family’s sports profile centered in Dallas.
