The Vegas Golden Knights bounced back from a shootout loss in Boston with a 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night at PPG Paints Arena, with Tomas Hertl scoring the winner on a power play with 32 seconds left in regulation.

How the game played out

Hertl opened the scoring late in the first period, his sixth goal of the season, set up by Mitch Marner. That was the only goal through 40 minutes. Pittsburgh then scored twice in the third period, on goals by Tommy Novak and Rickard Rakell, to take a brief 2-1 lead. Rakell has now scored in four straight games.

Trevor Connelly tied it 2-2 on a breakaway with 8:41 left. Vegas then killed off a late Pittsburgh 5-on-3, and shortly after the teams returned to full strength, Novak was called for tripping. On the ensuing power play, Hertl tipped a pass from Mark Stone past goalie Arturs Silovs for his second goal of the night.

Adin Hill made 23 saves for Vegas, while Silovs stopped 20 shots for Pittsburgh. Marner extended his points streak to 11 games. KTNV reported it was only the second time the Golden Knights have won in Pittsburgh in franchise history.

Around the game

Sidney Crosby was held without a point and remains tied with Marcel Dionne for sixth on the NHL career scoring list with 1,771 points. Evgeni Malkin missed the game with a lower-body injury. Pittsburgh has now lost three straight and seven of its last nine.

What it means for locals and visitors

The win gives the Golden Knights a split of the first two games on this road trip after Monday night’s shootout loss to the Bruins. Vegas plays next on Thursday at Detroit.
