October has become the deadliest month of 2026 for people on foot in the Las Vegas Valley, and local safety leaders are asking drivers and walkers alike to be extra careful as daylight fades earlier each evening.
The numbers
Ten pedestrians have been killed in the valley so far this October, and eight of those deaths happened after sunset, according to figures from PedSafe Vegas and the UNLV Transportation Research Center reported by FOX5. Through late October, the valley has recorded 64 pedestrian deaths in 2026, about 8% fewer than at the same point last year.
Safety officials say pedestrian deaths tend to climb in the fall as the days get shorter, and Daylight Saving Time ends this Sunday, Nov. 1, when clocks fall back an hour and darkness arrives even earlier during the evening commute.
#Dusk2Dawn campaign
Officials launched the #Dusk2Dawn pedestrian safety campaign on Wednesday morning at University Center Drive and Flamingo Road. PedSafe Vegas data shows Flamingo Road has been the deadliest stretch of road for pedestrians in the valley over the past five years.
Captain Jarvis Dudley of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Traffic Bureau said police can’t solve the problem alone and urged drivers to slow down and stop for pedestrians. “It takes every person to take time to think about other people,” he said.
What it means for locals and visitors
- Drivers: Slow down after dark, watch for people crossing mid-block, and give extra room near bus stops, schools and busy corridors like Flamingo Road. Halloween night (Saturday) brings more kids and costumed walkers onto neighborhood streets.
- Rideshare and delivery drivers: Be especially alert at pickup and drop-off points near the Strip and downtown, where riders often step into traffic to reach a car.
- Pedestrians: Use marked crosswalks and signals, wear something bright or carry a light at night, and make eye contact with drivers before stepping out.
