Key Takeaways

  • Cliff Atkinson is leaving his job as president and CEO of the Fremont Street Experience to become president of The Strat.
  • Golden Entertainment, which runs The Strat, confirmed the hire.
  • His last day downtown is Friday, Nov. 6, and he starts at The Strat on Monday, Nov. 9.
  • He only took the Fremont Street job in February 2026, so the downtown canopy is looking for new leadership after about eight months.

What’s Happening

One of downtown’s top jobs is about to open up again. Cliff Atkinson, who was named CEO of the Fremont Street Experience on Feb. 5, 2026, is heading north to Las Vegas Boulevard to run The Strat, according to a report by the Las Vegas Review-Journal that CDC Gaming carried on Oct. 27.

Golden Entertainment confirmed the move. In its announcement, the company said Atkinson will oversee all of The Strat’s operations: the 2,427-room hotel, the 80,000-square-foot casino and the tower, which is the tallest freestanding observation tower in the United States.

Atkinson told the Fremont Street Experience board about his plans before the news went public. He summed up the quick move with a simple philosophy: “Timing is everything in life.”

This isn’t his first Las Vegas resort job. Before Fremont Street, Atkinson was president of Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, a role he left in December 2025.

What It Means for Las Vegas

For The Strat, the hire puts a seasoned resort operator at the top of Golden Entertainment’s biggest casino, the north Strip landmark you can spot from just about anywhere in the valley. A new president often means a fresh look at room packages, dining and casino promotions, so locals who play there may see changes in the months ahead. The Strat already runs some of the cheapest rooms on our Comp Board, including its fall package.

For downtown, it means the Fremont Street Experience, which runs the Viva Vision canopy, the free shows and the big street events, has to find another leader. The reports don’t say who will replace Atkinson or whether there will be an interim chief. That hire matters to anyone who works or plays downtown, since the canopy drives a lot of foot traffic for the Fremont Street casinos.

What to Watch Next

  • Who the Fremont Street Experience board picks to replace Atkinson, and whether it names an interim leader before Nov. 6.
  • Any early changes at The Strat once Atkinson starts on Nov. 9, from hotel offers to casino promotions.
  • How downtown handles its busy holiday and New Year’s Eve season during the leadership change.
