Five Southern Nevada police agencies teamed up Thursday morning, Oct. 29, for a pedestrian-safety enforcement operation on Nellis Boulevard in the east Las Vegas Valley, according to FOX5. The operation is part of the annual #Dusk2Dawn pedestrian safety campaign, and it comes just ahead of Halloween night, when more kids than usual will be crossing streets after dark.
What happened
The sting focused on the marked crosswalk on Nellis Boulevard at Philadelphia and New World avenues, which sits inside a 25 mph school zone. Officers wearing costumes walked the crosswalk while patrol cars waited farther up the road. Drivers were stopped for not yielding to pedestrians, speeding through the school zone, or blocking the crosswalk.
Taking part were Las Vegas Metropolitan Police (traffic and patrol), North Las Vegas Police, Clark County School District Police, Henderson Police and UNLV Police. FOX5 did not report how many drivers were cited. Police said they plan to repeat the enforcement at other dangerous crosswalks around the valley.
“Just be aware of your surroundings,” CCSD Police Officer Keith Habig advised motorists, adding that drivers should not assume the car ahead of them is driving safely.
What it means for locals and visitors
- Drivers: Slow down in school zones and stop fully for anyone in a marked crosswalk. Never pass a car that has stopped at a crosswalk, since it may be stopped for someone you can’t see.
- Rideshare and delivery drivers: Expect heavy foot traffic in neighborhoods Friday evening, Oct. 31, and avoid pulling over in or across crosswalks to pick up or drop off.
- Families: Police urged trick-or-treaters to wear bright clothing, carry glow sticks or flashlights, and keep phones put away while crossing.
- More crosswalk stings are planned, so a ticket is possible anywhere in the valley, not just on Nellis.
