- The Nevada Gaming Commission approved two Las Vegas casino executive licenses in separate unanimous votes on Thursday, Oct. 22.
- Sean Lanni, son of the late MGM Mirage chief Terry Lanni, adds Park MGM to his role running The Cosmopolitan, Aria and Vdara, according to Casino.org.
- Christopher Ruffin, son of Circus Circus owner Phil Ruffin, was licensed as a Circus Circus vice president, mainly for family estate planning.
What’s Happening
Two well-known Las Vegas casino family names picked up new licenses this week. Casino.org reported that the Nevada Gaming Commission signed off on both at its Oct. 22 meeting.
Sean Lanni is already president and chief operating officer of The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Aria and Vdara. Casino.org reported that he will add Park MGM to that list. Because regulators had vetted him recently in a similar licensing action, he did not have to appear in person. His father, Terry Lanni, led MGM Mirage, the company that later became MGM Resorts International.
Christopher Ruffin was licensed as a vice president of Circus Circus. He told regulators the license is “primarily for family estate planning purposes” and that he has no immediate plans to leave Wichita, Kansas, where he is general manager of the Hyatt Regency Wichita, another Ruffin property. He is no stranger to the Strip: he once worked for his father as director of rooms at the old New Frontier, which was torn down in November 2007. Casino.org reported that he did not rule out a bigger Las Vegas role down the road. His sister, Michelle Ruffin-Stein, who runs the Wichita Marriott, was approved as a Circus Circus vice president in August for the same reason.
What It Means for Las Vegas
For guests, nothing changes overnight. Park MGM now sits under the same leadership as three of MGM’s big center-Strip resorts, which could mean closer coordination on events, dining and offers across those properties. At Circus Circus, the licensing points to long-term family succession planning for one of the Strip’s last independently owned resorts rather than a near-term shake-up.
What to Watch Next
- Any new shared promotions or packages linking Park MGM with Aria, Vdara and The Cosmopolitan.
- Whether the next Ruffin generation takes a more hands-on role at Circus Circus.
- Upcoming Nevada Gaming Control Board and Gaming Commission meetings for more Las Vegas licensing moves.
