Las Vegas got cheaper in August, and fewer people came anyway. About 3.03 million people visited in August 2026, down 4.3% from a year earlier, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. That happened even though hotel rates dropped to their lowest level of the year.
Key Takeaways
- Fewer visitors: 3.03 million in August, down 4.3% from August 2025 and about 137,000 fewer than July.
- Cheaper rooms: the average citywide room rate was $150.32, down 7.4%. On the Strip it was $153.15. Downtown it was just $85.68.
- Empty midweek rooms: hotels were 85.5% full on weekends but only 69.4% full Sunday through Thursday.
- Fewer fliers: Harry Reid International handled about 9% fewer passengers than last August.
Why the Numbers Fell
Part of the drop is the calendar. In 2025, Labor Day fell on Sept. 1, so many holiday visitors arrived in late August. This year Labor Day was Sept. 7, so that busy weekend landed in September instead. The LVCVA’s summary also pointed to a “less packed calendar” of events.
Conventions were the bright spot. Attendance rose 6% to 622,700, helped by Def Con, Black Hat, MAGIC, SuperZoo and the CHAMPS trade show, which moved from July to August.

The Airport Tells the Same Story
Harry Reid International reported passenger counts down about 9% from last August, with domestic travelers down 10.2%. Airlines did not all move the same way. Southwest carried 4.6% fewer passengers and Delta 8.8% fewer, while Frontier was up 35.3% and United up 1.8%. More low-fare seats on Frontier can be good news for anyone flying in on a budget.

What This Means for Your Trip
For visitors, a slower Las Vegas is a cheaper Las Vegas. When hotels are only about 70% full midweek, resorts compete harder for your booking with lower rates, resort-fee waivers, dining credits and free play.
- Go midweek. Sunday through Thursday is where the empty rooms are. A Tuesday or Wednesday night is often far cheaper than a Saturday.
- Look downtown. Downtown rooms averaged $85.68 in August, and Fremont Street is a short ride from the Strip.
- Stack the offers. Check casino loyalty offers before you book. Many resorts send better deals to members when business is slow.
- Compare flights. Frontier and United added Las Vegas passengers while others cut. Compare prices on our Book a Trip page.
- Check the board. See the current deals on The Comp Board, updated daily.
